0:07And then it's going on there. Oh not too much yourself. I'm doing okay. How you doing? I'm good I'm good. We couldn't do this in person the other day. I know but I know shit happens I know you remember coming down last year. Oh, totally. Yeah. Yeah. Oh cool. Yeah Get back down again. I remember lost him here on the show. You were saying that you had already recorded a record is that right? Come out now I'm trapped that one. Probably. I can't remember what month was it. I was back on her last year. Probably June probably a month like a year ago now. Yeah, then though It was the record that now that we already had done. Oh cool. Yeah. It took a while to get out there. Yeah big time That's all good. Yeah. It's working for you. Got the big video now. Yeah. Okay. I'll go shot out in LA. Yeah. What was that like?
0:57Oh, it was killer. It uh, it was really great. It was just uh, it was in the desert, Joshua Tree and we were just basically out there for a day and Just uh really had a great time. Cool. You know people starting to notice you? Yeah, yeah, you know, it's uh, it's been uh, it's been really good. The videos helped out a lot and the single being added to almost radio stations has been real help too. So yeah, things are going good. Yeah, two are coming up in the States. Yeah. It's your first time heading down there to play. Uh, we did a show in Texas um in March, uh, but this is the first time doing more than one date like a string of dates. So How was the reaction in Texas? Oh, it was great. Cool. Yeah, it was great. We were playing at sort of music festival and uh,
1:45And I was awesome. So if I saw glass? Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Who were you on the bell with? Um, we were on the bill with uh, a few other bands that I was a couple that I didn't know and then like the waking eyes from um, oh nice. Yeah, and uh, a friend of mine's band who I can't think of Right now. That's great. Uh, I feel like an idiot for not remembering. That's all good. Anyways. Yeah, cool. Yeah. You find it kind of hard to break out into the States Well, we haven't really tried that hard yet. So I you know, I'm just um I like to try to do it a different way. I like to sort of pretend like there's not a border there and it's just a big continent with a bunch of people on it. Yeah, sure. No. And just ask myself how we're gonna get down there and just do it. So cool. It's gonna keep at it
2:33Takes time, I think. All right. Well, let's play a song right now. Let's play a single sure in cowgirl. What do you think of when you hear that song? Um, I don't know anymore Uh, I don't know. It's just uh, it's just sort of like a walk in the wild side kind of too. I just sort of I just want to hear that sort of picture of sort of some sort of dark story of some kind. Cool. Here it is. Oh torpedo. You got a band behind you now.
7:15A Mexican kind of name. You guys are from out east. How'd you come about with the name? Um, it's one of those things Where we sort of needed a name and somebody sort of says El Camino and then somebody said torpedo and then somebody said El torpedo. Oh, yeah Basically that's the extent of it. Is it now like officially like a full band mat maze in El torpedo? Or is it kind of like a rotating like studio musician type deal? No, no, it's all gonna all be the same guys and with myself, but I mean I'm attending and putting it at another record fairly soon. Um, just on my own kind of thing. Oh, yeah, and then we'll be putting on their El torpedo record. I want to imagine shortly after that. Nice. You got songs written for that stuff? Yeah, yeah, I got it. You know, it's uh, quite
8:03quite uh, well it's been quite well as far as completion wise song-wise, but I just gotta get in and some of them are already recorded and Some of them might have to be recorded and some new ones I have to do too. So nice. Yeah What's the title gonna be you have mat maze on the first record mat maze plus El torpedo on the second record? Are you gonna have an album title or are you gonna go still keep with the I think I'll have an album title for For my new one. It's kind of uh, I have it's I think it's gonna be kind of a heavy vibe. So I'm gonna um I'm gonna try to think of a really suitable name for it. Cool. Yeah, how can we have any like album titles so far? Just in one or the first one. I just I kind of like having debut records just called You know, just pink salt titled. Yeah, and it was and with me and El torpedo it was you know our debut record as a sort of a band together and
8:51I really sort of want to um Accentuate El torpedo presence on this one. So having just me and them again is uh It's just a good way to sort of get the point across that it's a band sort of thing. So cool now You said you're recording a record solo. Is that just gonna be like an acoustic record or they gonna be backing you? No, it's uh, it's just gonna be uh me and uh, I mostly uh just uh Probably some other friends from from Halifax and uh just probably some different people and uh and Tim Baker from El torpedo is gonna be Probably a pretty big part of it. He he helps me produce anything. I do own my own. So nice good. Yeah, I produce in the band Yeah, exactly. Yeah, we we work well together and we sort of um co-produced a lot of stuff over the last few years So we're really good team in the studio now
9:38Do you record your vocals? I know you record everything at the same time like live off the floor. Do you do vocals too? Uh, I did a few lots most of my I um, we did everything like I sang Every song had a live vocal with it, but I ditched a lot of them just because I really have Perfectionist about how the song how this you know my voice sounds and and uh and all that and a lot of the bands Bleed bleep bleep into the microphone and it's just the fidelity is and it's good after a while So I just um, yeah, I read it a lot of a lot of the singing. I like almost a whole record really cool Which was a lot of record We're throwing uh, you know, I think cocaine carol took us a long time to get the right vibe But we played it well like tight, but to get the right vibe. It took us a long time
10:25we finally one night just went in and And uh, we just there was just the right vibe in the room at the time and swayed it down with that one We had to be right. We knew that one had to be right. So Yeah, fair enough. Well, let's choose a song off the new record. What do you want to play? um, let's play uh On the hood, which is something number 12 there. How come? Uh, I don't know. I just uh, I kind of like it. It's kind of a song with uh student's a brilliant kind of personal Honest as honest as as I can possibly be. I guess that's why I sort of feel good about it Uh, yeah, it's uh, I hopefully gonna be our next single. I'm hoping. Oh cool. Yeah, we get the heads up before everyone else. Thank you Yeah All the strange winners morning
11:16The sky turned red The vibrations went in These terrible songs on rainy day the pressure just started to fall You've seen doesn't do anything for me. It doesn't do anything at all John who could it's only six middle strings Heart bit somebody still
15:16Working with Sam Roberts up in Australia a little bit. Yeah, you guys good friends. Yeah. Yeah, I was hanging with him last night Um, yeah, no, we're good. Good buddies. Um Uh, yeah, no his new records sounds amazing. It's gonna be wicked. Oh really? Yeah, I'm excited. Do you know what it's coming out? Clear record. No, I don't really know Hopefully soon. Yeah, it's awesome. You know why he went out to Australia to record? Uh, just well, I mean in seeing where they were I mean they had this really great sort of converted church and moved a bunch of gear and it sort of just did like a sort of like a Uh, just in the middle of the country and but near the ocean, which is just a beautiful spot to record a record That's awesome. So, um, yeah, it's just kind of nice to to get away and you know and especially for for a guy like Sam who
16:03had such a big year and a big couple years to just be nice to To get away from everything and just be in the middle and know where to do it, you know Kind of do contribute to the record Um, I just I would just sort of show it up. I didn't really plan on playing on it. Um, I uh I just played played some league guitar on some stuff and I I sang a sort of mellow tune with that with Sam Just as him and I with some acoustic guitar sort of thing and uh, No, I just thought it was basically I just helped him about with some pre-production Um before the band got there, I just him and I just and mark Howard the producer anything they needed to get you know to get played. I sort of played it Um just just to kind of keep the vibe going, you know, put my two cents in every now and again
16:50Cool. Just be a fresh set of years Yeah, it was a lot of fun You guys went surfing too. I heard you're a big surfer every day yet. No, it's awesome Yeah, we had a great time. It was such a beautiful place to surf and Paradise really and uh, so yeah, we surfed usually every every morning at you know seven in the morning and surf all day and then get into the studio by noon and Sometimes uh right before dinner we go back out for a little while to surf. It's really living in dream life. Yeah, it was awesome I wish I could do that all the time. I guess you know you gotta be on tour I suppose. Yeah, exactly and Yeah, yeah, how do you feel about the downloading music? Uh, I don't know. I mean I just you know, I I'm sort of for it sometimes the other times is uh, somebody who's
17:39Trying to make a living at it. It's kind of a bummer times like, you know, it's uh, you know Tim Hortons doesn't give their donuts away for free and you know, um It's one of those things, you know, it's you basically say goodbye to any kind of relationship or friendship or you know family relations and just being on the road all the time and You know, it's just one of those things where there's so much sacrifice and you know putting yourself out there and it's just uh I don't think I don't think uh, you know 15 bucks is a lot to pay For for how much we put into a record, you know, like um, you know how much practice and Heart-wrenching, you know, the arc right trying to make sure everything's right and there's just so much involved that I mean, I don't mind paying for record if it's good, you know, so
18:28You know, that's the thing but at the same time there's a lot of shitty records out there that only have one good song on So, you know In that sense, you know, I'm all in for downloading because the person really didn't put together a good record But I I really put a lot into the record that we do and make sure it's a good record from stem to stern So it's one of those things it's kind of offensive to me and when when somebody doesn't want to you know, you know You know, pay for something that we work so hard at and I mean we call quit our job So this is you know, you know, there's a lot of debt you can do so it's not like we're rolling in it So It's one of those things that just I think it makes sense to to pay for something that you know somebody worked hard at Definitely doing its health your arms you more Uh, I don't know, you know, I don't know how many people are downloading or or what but uh
19:18It's it's probably helped quite a bit, you know, I'd like to see some numbers really Yeah, I wonder if there are any that you could figure out. I think you can yeah, I think I think it can be Just somewhat as to it. I think it's sort of an estimate, but it's fairly accurate. I think oh cool. Yeah, let's play other song off the new record your choice Um How about eight don't matter cool. I like them Sing on the show every week called five questions just five quick questions one word answer
22:59Okay, I pod or cd cd Latin or McCartney Leonard Alcohol or marijuana Knock off Saw you've written your most proud of back home weather And one word matinees Cool as he said last time Awesome really I said that last time me must be true. Yeah. Yeah, that's exactly I remember that I forgot that until you just said it now It's cool I was play one more song close us out Again your choice off new record old record. It's up to you Uh, how about back home weather after the old record? Okay. Cool. All right. Thank you so much
