0:03South Africa is where you're from, right? Yeah, what's the music scene like there? Is it all like hard rock like you guys play or what's it like? Not really hard rock the rock scene is actually kind of small in South Africa. It's more of like You know more there's a lot of like indigenous kind of local music that's popular there Like tribals kind of music. Yeah, it's tribal some it's like Afrikaans as well which comes from the Dutch You know it's a language that comes from from Dutch pretty much You know there's a kind of music called Quito, which is like African kind of dance meets rep Conestar it's actually kind of cool. It's cool But there's a lot of that kind of stuff and and then pop you know like all the American and I'm sure
0:50Yeah, of course, you know and that's the main thing and then the rock side is actually kind of small It's it's pretty tough as a rock band. Yeah, how'd you get into it some Sabbath records pop in some point? um, you know, I I Heard I think just through friends and that you know who maybe had all the brothers who'd been overseas and brought back, you know, Metallica CD or whatever, you know, we didn't get very much rock when I was a kid You know, I don't know if it was sanction or what but in some of the big stuff came through like Metallica's black album I think really got going to into metal when I heard that for the first side of it or the softer stuff Um of the Metallica. Yeah, the black album. It's got two sides to it kind of it does harder and softer Yeah, I think they I think the whole album is just yeah brilliant
1:38You know, it's it's a I mean some people don't like the album. So like yeah, it's when they sold out the way You know, I do love the old stuff But what got me into it was that I mean I I hadn't heard of them before you know in South Africa and that album was huge And then I started going back and getting a justice for all Yeah, you know and kill them all and ride the light, you know, I got all of them Yeah, and you know, I love all of those but that's probably the album that that got me started on the whole thing Nice. Well, let's play song off that album. What do you want to hear? Let's hear Time's forgiven. Nice good tune. Feel like unforgiving too as well that new one they put out Um, I do like it, but not as much. I'm I'm very much an old Metallica fan, you know fan of the of all the stuff
4:03Yeah Yeah, you just heard some Metallica requested by Dale from see their talking here with them in Kitchener
8:33You got this cross-canned tour going on. Yeah, we you know for one we we love coming to candidates, you know It's got great beer and you know great woman in It's fun, you know, we always have fun in Canada, but it's you know, it's a it's a good market for us And it's you know, we've been doing the States so long and it's a it's time not to concentrate on You know on other markets, so we just went to South Africa Oh, no, I played that played there again. First time there was it kind of like a homecoming type thing I'm also homecoming talking about Metallica. We actually we had three shows with him. No, I Africa just Giant stadium shows first time hanging out with them, too Yeah, yeah, I met Robert when he was playing with Ozzy. I went and did Ozzfest in 2002, but You know, so I've known him for quite a while, but he's still new to the band. It's not that
9:22Yeah, you know, I mean Metallica for me is is Metallica with new state. I mean Robert's amazing Yeah, oh, yeah, it's fantastic, but growing up as a kid was those four faces, you know That's when I got into them, you know after the the burden and everything, you know, just I'm a I'm a new state guy You got a new album coming up pretty soon acoustic CD DVD type thing What's on it old stuff new stuff a little bit of everything a little bit of everything we we have some from common effect Some from disclaimer We kind of I'd say 50 50 pretty much we even got a we got a cover on their called jam cover. Oh nice. What's on immortality? Yeah, good stuff for you guys to cover it too. It sounds pretty cool Yeah, I mean we're all pill jam fans Yeah, and I guess you know that grunts movement, you know, it's fans the whole thing, you know, so we wanted to kind of pay
10:14You know, obviously that so Got that and we've also got a song from our first album ever That we recorded and released in South Africa before we got signed in the States. What made you put that on there? People were people wanted to hear that album because it's it's got some of the same songs on that we did put on disclaimer But there's you know, there's a bunch of songs that that you know are only available on that on that album and yeah, some of the songs We did you know that did make it to this claim we recorded and changed completely, so it's I think for fans, you know Who it's interesting to go back and see how other song used to be completely different, you know, they're completely different chorus or or whatever So it's kind of interesting in a way kind of funny in a way to you, but you know, it's not available anywhere else only in South Africa
11:01So it's pretty cool. We said well, you know, we'll we're trying to work on getting it available You know in the States, Canada and everywhere, but for now, we'll just we're like cool You know, we'll put we'll put a song in there from that album. Yeah, let's play a song. What do you want to hear? I? Only has some seven dust what song Angel Sun the wrote that song for Full in straight We died It's a good song We're gonna go from see there talking with the acoustic CD DVD want to just talk on that for a second
15:20What are the arrangements like is it like shaker is it full drum kit bass acoustic bass? Yeah, it's basically two acoustics I just play an electric bass, but it's just straight straight in the system I didn't know distortion or facts. No effects. Nothing just you know clean clean bass and and and full drum kit as well You know, and then just two vocals Yeah, just you know slow it down, you know, just kind of getting there, you know groove a little bit, but it's Playin' acoustics, you know, it's something we enjoy doing, you know, because It's so stripped down and it's so you know, it's so raw, you know, you can really appreciate the songs for For what the hell, you know, you're not hiding behind
16:06effects and distortion and you know, it's not like you took you know a Song and made it cool by produced by over producing in the studio, you know, yeah songs really kind of stand You don't have to stand on there on their own two feet if that makes any sense Is that how they come to the studio to Sean bring him in on acoustic guitar? Yeah, I mean, you know, a lot of this even right everything has a work for you guys. Yeah, there's pretty much a collaboration Between everyone but I mean a lot of the songs do you know come about on acoustic guitar It's just on the bus if there's a long drive You know send the back lounge Hey, cool. Let's put it down, you know, a little bictaphone in the back lounge and You know, and then you know, maybe we'll take into a sound check and throw it around or you know If we get into a rehearsal space together, mm-hmm craft some time or just bounce ideas off each other and
16:56You know and that's how songs are born sometimes. They just come from just messing around in a sound check Oh for sure playing some kind of rough and then You know They just kind of born that those I think are my favorite because they those capture the The moment the energy you know, that that of that time. Yeah, it's cool. Yeah. Do you ever play acoustic songs live or was it just that one time deal? Um, we do every now and then we first started playing acoustically You know or realizing we could actually do it was when we were turning the three doors down and we played a lot of theaters where They'd have seating in the theaters and we're like well You don't really want to play a heavy plug-in set when you know kids crying marsh and getting crazy You know if they're gonna sit or be stuck behind chairs, you know, we're gonna sit too
17:43So like cool. It's doing acoustic and it worked really well, you know and fans liked it and So it was just something we'd do every now and again for fun, you know, cuz it's fun different for us as well You know sure change it up a little bit Yeah, change it up and then again when Sean got sick for a while And I guess couldn't scream as much and jump around That's nice that kind of hand ladies and gentlemen Hard. Yeah, she's not Pat at the place. Well, you recorded the thing. Yes, that's um, that's how we met Pat We met him at the Grapeshtte pub We open for his band Oh no, I well, who was he playing with back then? He was in a local band. That was popular. It's really way back Yeah, I mean we just came over and and was our first tour. I mean we were just you know just starting
18:32Just Sean and I and we had another drummer. Okay and played through Philly and You know got off stage and came back in and have a beer and watch some play like wow that guy's badass, you know and Got a bottle of egg off the show and I got him hamming We're like dude, why don't you join the band and pretty much jumped on the bus and that was it stolen away Yeah, nice. I was playing another song. What do you want to hear one of your tunes see their song? What's your favorite play life my favorite play life? I think because of me because of me's the Just cuz it's kind of heavy and and we do like a little Pan-terra tribute in the middle of it live You know, so it's that that for me is kind of fun You know and people really get into it because it's heavy and kind of upbeat and there's always a good put
19:21On that one so it's you know the heavy the heavy I think the heavier the song is it's more fun live You know from the band is more energy. Yeah, just you know adrenaline school I'm gonna go from see there want to talk with the downloading music
23:05You think it's helped your harm to more the illegal stuff at least like people just grabbing your tunes for free You know it is I think it that does help You know it's like a bit of sweet thing, you know, it can help you as a band if you're a young band You know, that's trying to get your music out there, you know, and people it's available on the internet You know, I'm sure it would you know benefit you in spreading the you know spreading the word around but It definitely hurts album sales, you know for I guess signed bands that are trying to recoup You know cost and the record deals and stuff, you know, and it's if you're not if you're not selling the units, you know, you You know you're in debt, you know, and a lot of bands like a lot of bands are in bad shape as a result of that, you know, so I
23:51Think I think it can for a baby band is probably good when there's you know Not much money involves yeah, but I think on a bigger scale it can hurt you, you know And like the Metallica thing and it's with the whole Napster thing, you know, like It was probably a good thing, you know, I think in a way because out of that we got like iTunes and yeah I made the industry take shape. Yeah, you know, and that's really cool You know that you can go buy music now, and you know the bands are happy and people are happy like I mean I'm on iTunes like Constantly, you know, and I love it. You know it's changed my life It really has I listen to more music now than I have in my entire life I'm sure you're finding bands every day too like I am discover bands, you know, oh Sometimes I'll type in the song
24:36I know and there'll be like a couple different artists that covered the song Let me know that version like I like the guys voice or you know Good bass or that's a good piano player whatever it is, and then you discover You discover a lot of music like that, you know, it's really cool thing is gonna get rid of the whole album concept though Like I mean even carbon effect. I mean it's a record you get pictures You got it's a really cool book that I like the way the paper looks and everything you're not gonna have that Five ten years down their own. It's all just single driven think it's you know, yeah, it's gonna be Singles I think it's definitely gonna go in that direction, but I think as a band, you know, we'd like to continue Releasing albums. I think I don't know if it'll ever completely go away I mean you feel you go to stores. I mean they still sell vinyls and stuff Yeah, you know, they're completely obsolete by yeah, you know like technological standards, but
25:23People people want it people like them, you know, they're sending Something cool I mean I'll I always love like getting a CD and opening it up and Take that the booklet and reading the words of the song like you doing you're a kid You skateboard to the store and you save it up for the CD and you get back and put on loud and you listen everything You read all the thank yous and it's it's cool, you know, it's it's hands on I mean the digital stuff's awesome It's really practical, but I mean I still I still love albums, you know Yeah, same here cool We do this thing every week five questions five quick questions one more answers cool first ones iPod or CDs iPod McCartney I'm gonna say McCartney Alcohol song you've written your most proud of broken and one word see there one word
26:19Drunk nice man, it's like three four in the afternoon Not yet, I'm still I was rolled out of bed, so I'll start usually about two hours before the show It's I think as a rule we start You got a couple beers before you go on stage You know so you got to just take the edge off a little bit and get loose, you know get into the get into that stage into stage mode so two hours is the It's like the you know the cut off or the or the beginning or whatever and you have a couple beers and then by showtime you Good to go you good to go any other pre-show rituals? Not really, you know, it was to have a couple beers before the show You know usually put on a bit of Pantera, maybe seven dash. You have something a little heavier
27:05You know pump you up a little before the show and you know get ready to rock and You know maybe a bit of porn Thanks, I appreciate it. It's on close out. What do you want to hear one of your tunes someone else's song doesn't matter to me Someone else's song let's hear Pantera
