07It's day two of South by Southwest and one of the best parts of this festival is discovering new music So we're about to go to Canadian Blast and talk to some of Canada's biggest bands and where they find new music I'm curating a guitar festival called sleep walk. Where's that gonna be? Well, there's actually a sleep walk at South by here We're doing it tomorrow and It's called Trinity So it's sleep walk guitar festival But the actual festival itself is in Toronto and it happened last winter in November and it's gonna happen again next winter So through that I've had to really brush up on figuring out who the guitar players in the world are that excite me
58You know because I kind of you know when I was a kid that mattered and now I've sort of forgotten And so I'm having to relearn which is a lot of fun I sit in the back of the band as we're driving to the next city and I scour iTunes and find new stuff and old favorites and Right now I'm listening a lot to the Richard Buckner CD Safe Vincent The new Joel Plaskett I just bought yesterday. I started listening to it. Oh, it's out. I didn't even know it was out yet He's been releasing singles for like yeah. Yeah, it's good. It's really good Everything I find is online every single thing it's like Pandora and stuff that are really really useful I work at a venue as well. So you see lots of bands coming through in Regina
46Yeah, that's mostly like black metal. It's a lot of death metal and a lot of screaming But once those bands leave then there's other good bands that come in and place Probably a mixture of these two I work at the same venue as Paul and you know looking at different sites like stereo gum pitchfork Really it's been to be honest vice and like some serious and pitchfork like a tip five years ago to kick my own ass for saying this But they're on the ball sometimes you become a hipster. Well, sure. I'll admit that which immediately negates my hipster to Yes, yeah, it was well played I go to Spencer when we're driving for a hundred hours every day Spencer just goes through his iPod and plays me. What's new shazam? I've shazam bands. That's how I found out about
38Local natives I shazam them in an urban outfitters in an urban outfitters. That's how cool I am Take a dirty picture for me. I shazam them in a Glassless eyeglass place. I was picking up some new eyeglasses for my eyes What you're not wearing right now? No, I am they're invisible. Oh That's like all the way hipster. You can't even see him this so ironic 90% of the stuff that gets recommended by friends so That seems to be the stuff that really sticks with you because you have someone who's opinion you care about nagging you to To check it out. It's almost like that. I love that seat belt alarm
28They have in most cars now. They've been like should we what should we go? What sort of a reminder should we should we go with the nag feature? They're like yeah nag feature for sure. It's like do you have your seat belt on? I know I don't have it on I'm gonna put it on in a second. She should put it on now I'm like I know I'm gonna put it on in a second. No, I mean why isn't on you know you've been driving for like 30 seconds And you're like all right putting on my seat belt fine. You should design seat belt alarm systems Oh man that's not a little music there. It's already there that little bang bang bang It's like I just picture that little conversation happening in my head Anytime I hear music or someone tells me that a band that I think I might like I make a little note on my phone
14And then when I get a chance like we'll sit down at computer and try and look all that music up And I had this one band the step-kits that I actually got to see last night here. It's up by they're awesome I have no idea why they were on my phone. I don't know someone told me about them if I read about them But you know that's the kind of thing I'm into just whatever way you can find out about something that's good You know somebody it's all about like just stumbling upon shows that are usually underattended and you just happen to walk in a bar last Year we saw a band called Buffalo killers. They really really like really Doug. They're so good You know there's only a handful of people there, but they just gave it I mean like and there's always like the big shows the big lineup So we hate standing in line and we hate like you know going to see a band that you can maybe see it a festival in the summer It's all about that. Forget the line. Forget the line. She's a rhyme there
01Forget the line But by your time, but yeah, no Just just explore and stumble in the stuff and just keep it open mind And the day two and while the internet's good friends suggestions are better for music for me I still love a good old record store
