15Hey, I'm looking for Marshall. Yep speaking awesome. This is Matt with MSN. How are you man? Good. How are you doing? I'm good. I'm sorry. We couldn't do this in person things got a little messy for me And now we got to do it over the phone, but it's all good. Oh, yeah, no worries man. How was the show last night? Yeah, we're yeah midnight set time. I feel bad that we're talking so early in the morning It's all good. Yeah, no, it was really fun Nice so I guess we'll talk a little bit about the record talk a little bit about the band and a little bit about the live show Too if that works for you. Is there anything you want to bring up anything you want to talk about? Okay, so I'll just ask questions and you answer Okay, I like this relationship we have Well, let's start with the live show
02Let's start because you guys are on a tour and I'm hearing there's pop rocks and confetti and a whole bunch of stuff that you don't You don't see it every at every band show. So where did the idea for that of really making it more of an experience come from? I guess it's evolved you know over the history of the band It's tried to you know for ourselves and for the audience flatable balloon Change it up every night are these things you find like the balloons you find you know wall touring on the road and decide
58Hey, let's that sounds cool. Let's try that Sometimes are it just like we flatable blue It's a major so that we no go ahead. Sorry Well, I just they pull at one of our son at this one point of the song what song is that? It's called arrows. Okay. It's on our last record and Take in the middle of an o where something three people up this one of the most memorable shows
59When was when was this three-person show because things must have things must be not three people anymore I would think That was a couple years ago. So yeah, I we haven't had one of those for a while What when did it start to grow when did you start to notice it move from from three people to today people are actually coming to see us now? Well, it's been very slow. Yeah, but it's been very steady. That's a good Not bad, you know You mentioned touring in there there was a quote from you that I read while doing some research here about about this record saying
48It's about us trying to understand the drive of doing what we do in terms of you know touring and being a band So what have you learned? That you decided to put on the paper that you felt that you had to get at Well, I don't know if it's so much what I've learned, but what I'm interested. Okay You know just thinking back over there we put into this and most places that we've slapped Three people show them that kind of thing and then and yes, like we're all through something and a big part of pinning it down
49Or to find out name Between you know the between um, you know, that's a musician. That's an interesting idea to me Well, yeah, well even the the song title of art and a wife not even I mean I've heard the song a few times I haven't sat down and actually list like read the lyrics I tend to listen to music and melody more when I hear a song for the first couple of times sure But art and a wife just from what you're saying the title of that songs make me makes me think that there's this paradigm between Art of what you're doing and and making it a lover of yours And and all the the fights that you have with a lover the greatness that you have with a lover And and all of that but this is now with with an art form
35Is that what the songs is that is that what the songs about? Well, that sounds particularly a bit more like I now I just want a life full of art and a wife Okay, so two separate things Yeah, it's a bit of a different idea, but definitely along the same lines I think you know And then this the idea wasions, you know
31Why is it called the poets dead are you leaving something behind? No, I think it's just sort of thumb So it's these images that he could do these paintings he made getting deep for early in the morning, man
35I Strive in here. It's all right. No, that's an interesting thought to go on. I wish I wish we had plenty of time to go into that But I want to talk a little bit about songwriting because one of you guys said it might have been you because I didn't write a name Besides this quote saying there's greater focus on songwriting this time. So what does that mean? Are you guys more sitting there whiteboarding? Every word are you I don't understand was there a lack of focus last time? Well, it kind of was yeah, okay last time it was very much I Mean just not whiteboarding every word being you know going back and
22Trying things in different ways instead of jam it and it would become something who'd become something and say I'm the song down over and over and to take us. It sounds like I just go Instead of just going with it sounds like it was more of a collaborative process from what you're saying Yes, yeah Yes For sure and it was a much longer process Oh, yeah, yeah, and we tied to this in the increase in focus on
20Who are the producers on this record? Gus fan go yeah and we're in our F. Did you go to Montreal to do it then? Yeah? Oh, no, so you guys have a kinship with Montreal being being Saskatchewanites is that the word I'm looking for? You I lived in Calgary for a while and we never knew what to say we Don't know if anyone does that's good. It's nice to have that mystery around you So what is with the kid I hear your habs fan like myself? So what is with this kinship to Montreal? I know you did the last one in Montreal you did this one in Montreal So why why are you keep trekking across the country to make records?
08Uh, record we do with our friend case and he had a right and this was a similar thing at home We have a lot of friends there and you know, it's really ideal. Well not this year man. Not not at the moment Is it safe to say that the voice we hear on the track is the one who wrote the lyrics for that song? Other with lyrics and you know people
04Write different lines here and there We do something called five questions before I let you go here five quick questions one word answers Road or studio? Landon or McCartney Landon when you hear a song what usually hits you first lyrics melody or rhythm The lyrics song you've written you're most proud of is that just because I mentioned it you're trying to make me happier Is that for real? Yeah, it's pretty happy with that one cool in one word rah-rah
59Nice I like it. I'll take that rockin is good And also okay for Landon or McCartney. Yeah Can I say Dylan instead? Oh, yeah, man. I love when people give me I can't remember someone just told me Lou read the other day And I was like that's different one So you're not a Beatles guy you go more for the for the in-depth Dark I'm more I'm more Bob Bob and Neal is more my that's my Landon and McCartney's Bob and Neil I like that On the topic of music before before I let you go just because I heard you're a country fan But your band does not make country music at all is that a struggle for you or is that just a nice outlet to do other stuff? I have a country band at home Very nice, okay cool. Well great chatting with you man and
06I'm a big fan of the record. I'm gonna listen to it again this afternoon and And I'll send Julie the link to this when it's up And then we can tweet it and post it and do all the you know the interwebs stuff that you got to do nowadays For sure. Yeah, that was great
