06Day two of our north by northeast coverage here in Toronto It's gonna be night about music discovery. It started a little early with Mark Marin given the keynote speech at the high It just behind me here and it was amazing couldn't shoot it couldn't get an interview with him But I did sneak myself on out and got a little bit of video for you But but nothing nothing huge But tonight's gonna be amazing because it's all about discovery We're gonna just walk around town and find bands. I've never been to the Cameron House I've lived here three years and I don't know why I haven't been there But we'll go check that out and hopefully see a cool band then gonna head over to see my friends the fast romantics over at supermarket And hopefully is a cool band on before them as well, and we're just gonna just gonna walk around we're gonna discover some music So let's uh, let's go do that I'll take two of a black from over it I can be with them from so It's amazing so we walk in I think I hear oil and water and just like I love the song
22Right, so I had to come up to you afterwards and be like we got to get them on the show because this is right there You're on the mountain. I appreciate that and and chums playing another different song soon Yeah, yeah, song I dig is not even the hit you have another actual that's my solo stuff That's my solo stuff that chums playing but the band's a little bit of a departure from that So tell me about oil and water because we just showed people the foot yeah oil and water is uh That was a song that was written about a year and a half ago Maybe two years ago beyond the mountain has gone through a lot of changes A lot of members have come and gone as bands do when they're we know in their beginning stages and beyond the mountain started as a duo is myself and a country singer from Vancouver named Cash Crawford and uh She's she's brilliant. I mean I've I've nothing bad to say about her but she decided to leave the band to pursue a solo career and I felt like I had put a lot on the line for the band and I know that she sacrificed a lot too
10And it was just one of those moments kind of like a civil war's esque story of how this was just not going to work So to depart ways not only as I mean we were living together You know, we were really close friends and then bandmates as well I started writing this song called oil and water just about how sometimes and it's not about one person or the other It's just these things are not meant to match and to mix and uh because she was so focused on on country music I think that's where a lot of the western Remfersons come from I mean the first line that I wrote was I'm going to take my smith and wesson and every shot's going to teach a lesson It's it's dark It's dark for me as a solo artist and then also dark for the band when I first showed it to uh to cairin shake up They were like whoa You know like where's this coming from a little bit but uh I don't know sometimes through the most uh, you know the tackling parts of uh of a spirit
57There's magic in there somewhere, so I'm glad that song came out Yesterday I see hops and he's like working this band called the moors You need to see them when they say it's like okay one of these days I'll go see them Okay, and then I walk in here and they're like oh they're on stage right now. Holy shit. This is amazing That is amazing and that's what I love about these uh shows. It's like every time we play Actually the crowd has been really good too, but we're like starting out band
44So we're just happy to play to nobody and and we're happy to play to five people Just starting up there. What do you mean how long you been here? Well, I've been doing it for a long time, but we we this band together have been together for about a year I guess really maybe a little bit longer, but it's it hasn't felt like that long So we're kind of in like the baby stages where we still Trying to build a fan base and trying to try to get our music out there So anytime we can play in front of anybody's rad But these things are awesome because there's always somebody in the crowd like industry people are just crawling around The city, which is nice because you don't have to go look for them Because that never works out anyways. What was the last song called? Oh, yeah, yeah, isn't it? Like guitar like I don't know guitars. It's well. It doesn't matter. It's pretty Uh, yeah, it was called perfectly sane and it's the single actually that we released stuff Tell me about that tune because I got that tune we shot that tune people just saw that
31Yeah, well, thank you for shooting it. I um You know what I think it was one of the last tunes that we wrote off the record and uh I don't know. I just had this like big big chorus and we kind of knew we wanted to do something with it It sounded very like radio ready and uh, yeah, I don't know We just we just released it and and it's been doing pretty well But it's one of my favorites and it was uh it almost didn't make it on the record Actually, it was really weird because the chorus and the verse are so different but uh Yeah, it's one of my favorites. It seems to be one of those like big like anthem songs Everybody can just like Someone on the light or I saw that guy and I'm gonna find him again actually because he's my favorite It's my good friend Matthew Angus. Hi. I'm so excited to finally see the past romantic
40So good to remeat you for the first time ever. I've never known you ever as a human I actually haven't seen a show of yours in like six years and I'm sorry and I apologize No, but no, it's important to keep it special That's it. That's why I do it special because you guys you keep playing on days that I'm not in town is the problem Well, that's not on purpose No, no purpose, but I want to talk about funeral song because I love the song and I love the record and Thank you and people just saw it and I'm sure they dig it now too. Well, thank you everyone Uh, well, it's uh, I don't know It's a funny song because like everybody when when they heard the song was called funeral song and the album's called after life blues, right? So everybody was like are you okay, man? Like And they're all right. Oh, things are great. Like things have never been better, but it's the the
27The album's really happy, you know, so it's weird it the the song was really about Um a breakup at the first, you know, like but it was like the good part of a breakup It's like when you realize that it was a good idea to end that awful thing So it's like a celebrate. It's like a wake, you know I should have called it wake song and then people wouldn't have freaked out so then they'd probably be like What's going on with the boat tunes? Why are you talking about singing the right and I didn't want to confuse people so funeral song
