0:02Tonight's exclusive backstage pass features on the band three doors down at a chance to catch up with the band before they're shown Detroit this past month Okay, so you're up in the eschataba so I was pretty as a tile. Yeah, what was the music scene like when you first started out? Towards and you know in eschataba, there's really not one You know we kind of had to go outside of eschataba to find places to play and you know It just it's really no scene there. They might be one or two bands there You know that we all have to travel out of that town to go find work You know, I guess you'd say we'd go to Bluxie or Mobile or we'd go to New Orleans and play or You know down in Florida, so we had to go hunt for a scene You know kind of how'd you break away from all that stuff? Oh, we got into it by I guess a local radio
0:53a local radio back home Called 97 9 station and they was real good to us man, and they had a homegrown show that was once a month they did a feature on local artists and it was called the homegrown show and just had Local boys that would get to come in there and play their acoustic snow and we had been you know out tour and you know the coast area, you know and Just got to get on this radio station a couple times and got our record added to that From the homegrown show It's kind of hard to explain it, you know, it's but it's more like just An hour's worth of local musicians once a month and then it went from that to the regular rotation
1:39They can spark record company interest, you know because we went straight up the charts, and I guess that's how it happened, you know Well, it was a it was one before that it was a demo. Yeah Oh, yeah, it had quite a few it had a loser Sorry quite a few was all So you released a quick night back in 97 what was the difference between then when it was released first and when it blew up huge Well, man, that song how blew up real fast, you know, it kind of just took off overnight, man, so I mean The tour took us on 19 months man. We was gone 19 months and I tell you it took
2:25us a while for our head to quit spinning after the because it just went from a local thing to a Worldwide thing and it was really overwhelmed It's kind of you have to go through it to understand it I guess because it's just something that's real hard to Oh Exclusive feature on three doors down right there was Kryptonite
6:26Now most fans don't know that Brad the lead singer of the band used to be their drummer Brad started off on drums Yeah, what was it like to have a drummer and a lead singer? Is that way to stop it? No, I thought it was was kind of cool where we did it We sit Brad up front on stage and we'd walk around Brad and he had play and sing at the same time So it was it was a lot of fun and you know when we got a record label They came in and said they thought we might need a front guy which we had thought about it for a while You know and we picked up a guy for the bird like a tour named Richard Liles that came out and did the tour with us And he's a good guy, you know good guy from back home and this tour we picked up Daniel Adair So Brad still writes our songs with the drums when we get ready to write and stuff
7:14But as far as our tour and we we had we hired hired gun dad who plays on the album Josh Freeze played on the record. Okay. He's done all kind of things. He's the drummer for a perfect circle. That's where first Yeah, okay, that must be and I was shoot he's played on all kind of records now Just you name him. He's probably played on The new records used to be well for most bands the road record. Yeah, it's definitely the road road. Yeah He was wrote You know that's kind of where we was at when we wrote that record, you know So I mean we could which are right about things we can relate to you know And I think that that was definitely where we was at at that time No, I don't think so man. I think this next record. We've been writing this time on road quite a bit and
8:05It's been a lot of a lot more rocking, you know getting back to old three-door freaks of just rocking ass, you know Yeah, yeah, the duck and run kind of stuff. Yeah half of a
12:10rec songs from the first record and the second record and there's a New song on there that's probably gonna be on the next record and it's a cover tune of a limb skinner Yeah, pretty much we we all pretty much have some skinner roots and a summer hot thing. Yeah No, no, no, it ain't nothing like that But it and you know what I think you know that story about how new young the skinner up They was actually friends, you know, you think so? Yeah, yeah, because I know for a fact because Judy a band's aunt's wife comes out to our shows actually the guy that was in there We're like well, we go. That's the Sun and all to know what yeah, that's a
12:58Bandsance Sun and all he's married to Ronnie's daughter. That's crazy. Yeah, and yeah, and uh, so we get kind of inside scoop You know on all that so we know that they was personally okay with each other It was just a just kind of a Music you know what I mean You wonder Why can't that be me and his life is filled with all these good intentions He's left a lot of things. He'd rather not mention right now just before he says good night
13:53Never let a smile and be He says if I can be like that Just a little one day In those shoes If I can be like that One more left to my s
14:55Cue the backstage passes exclusive feature
17:21With three doors down you just heard be like that before that duck and run and before that their first single kryptonite The band recently traveled to Iraq and shot two videos for the song when I'm gone when I'm gone I had two videos the first one I think was the one who used to Canada. I thought yeah, it was released in Canada and Europe and places like that and uh we uh did the that was the one did with uh, you know, we Was like we was buried in graves, you know, it was kind of cool. It was actually cool when to make but uh We went and did a trip overseas and played for the summa guys and the service, you know And uh when we come back we had all this footage, you know, and it was like these guys pieces together and It was like whoa, man
18:07So we kind of just ended up with two videos, you know, and uh Yeah, the mud videos what we call the one where we was all buried in and uh that was released in Canada and uh Europe Yeah, because it has so much, you know military and everything and I just everybody's don't go for that You know what I mean true outside of the United States, you know Yeah, it was a lot of fun to do that too. We got to go over there and See how them boys, you know function day to day, you know, and they really give up a lot man They give up a lot of their time and their families, you know, to go keep us free, you know Exactly. Not many people get to visit over there to get me Cool experience there. The whole thing was great
18:53It was uh, it was real uh honor to go over there and do that We got to go in places and some places we didn't even know where we was at because it was our top secret You know and we couldn't take no pictures, you know and because it could you couldn't disclose where we was at by land Wow, you know, so when we took a picture we had to be up like side of tank and side of airplane or something But you couldn't give no to landscape It was pretty it was pretty intense, man Oh inside of this In christin this life that I can hide Somewhere in this darkness there's a line that I can't find
19:39Maybe it's too far away just blind just blind Not seeing my skin
20:44I won't tell you to start this I'm alive, but I'm gonna be inside I actually got in the past year become a little
23:23Affiliated with a couple of guys and they're Tony Stewart and Dale's and one of our videos we made and uh, you know I never was a Huge fan of it until I kind of got to get around them a little bit, you know and uh, it's really an interesting thing man I I really like you know going and seeing them races now and uh just because Them guys man, it takes something to go around that track that fast that long. You know what I mean? I don't know man. I don't know. I don't know. I'd like to try Yeah, let's get near them called. We'll get out of here. We'll we'll like to stand beside it while he's getting in it or something We never actually got to get in it Maybe we all gonna try to do it again that we had a car race in uh, Michigan
24:09This past year we had the three doors down car that Tony Stewart drive And uh, we're gonna try to do it again this year Yeah, so you guys had all the sand and ask her thing wasn't really a label thing pushing it No, it was all the forces at work. Yeah, we kind of all got in it together, but Before that, you know Dale and uh three doors has been good friends, you know for a while now Um he comes to the shows, you know, we've been to his house, you know time or two and hung out, you know So it was more of a friendly thing between Dale and us and Dale's actually the car owner And uh, Tony was driving so I really don't give high priority in your family lives Definitely man. How hard is it? It's real hard man. Uh, I think that your family and friends like that
24:57Basically your family is the ones that keeps you grounded, you know Keeps you keeps you in touch with the real world, you know, it's easy to get lost out here in this Realm of not so reality, you know So should we do a bring on the road to show them? Yeah, I bring uh, bring my wife out a little bit No, actually my dad is gonna get to come out. I'm gonna bring him out in uh 10 days from now Last part last couple days of the tour. Yeah, we'll bring him out and let him check it out. He comes out every once in a while 100 days have made me older Since the last time that I saw your pretty face A thousand lives have made me colder And I don't think I can look at this the same
25:47But all the miles are separate Disappearing out when I'm dreaming of your face I'm here without you, baby But just if I think about him about you all the time I'm here with you still with him tonight It's only you
26:32The backstage passes exclusive feature continuing with three doors down here without you
29:15Only on the backstage pass Downloading has been plaguing many musicians for a long time. How does three doors down feel about it? Well, you know, I mean that's kind of a Mr. Touchy's one there, you know, I mean I think that it's a great tool for Up and coming bands that don't have a lot of Means of getting their music out there But then on the other side where it's bands like ourselves that count on it for a living, you know It's kind of getting into our pockets, you know, I mean it's like It's like an artist let me put this to you like this if I artist set in a room painted a painting And then somebody's combined stole it, you know what I'm saying? That's kind of where it's at, you know, I mean, it's a good thing and a bad thing I think that like a local act that don't have a deal, you know or the money to put their stuff out You know on a big level that's a great tool for you know
30:02So not be forgotten. It's recorded but never put on the record but I could get a play to the troops there Yeah, we played it over there. That's what that song was for, you know, we just We didn't want to put out a song that anybody could get the wrong idea, you know, and music's definitely Open to interpretation, you know, and that song is pretty pretty pretty brutal song, you know, and it's about the 9-11 you know the 9-11 deal and it's not a Morningful song, you know, it's more like a revengeful song, you know We just didn't want to put the wrong idea out to people, you know So that because definitely we would hate for somebody Say that they heard this song and just went out and did something bad, you know, I'm sorry That's all for this week's edition of the backstage pass. We'll see you next week when George strum will opolis comes in co-host with me
30:51So then take it easy use three doors down away from the sun on the backstage pass at 8.3 cj iq
