0:02Hello Hey, it's not around there. That's me Matt it's Matt. How are you doing? Good my friend. How are you? I'm going from Skype. What is this number that is showing up on this thing? You know what it is Skype. It is Skype. You got me I've done that before people are like where the hell you calling me from? I Go home plans. I'm like, oh better use my Skype. That's great. No, it's okay. And you know what it sounds crystal clear. I would never know Good, I'm glad other than the the call display that says like 129 apple pie It says zero zero zero one two three four five six which is really interesting What's my phone number? Yeah, it's much too fresh six. So you tell the fans at least call me after the show. It's one two three
0:52So the last time you did something for MSN I guess would have been the the dare mariana's trench thing about a year ago That correct. God that was a lot of fun Yeah, so they asked me to ask you about it if you wanted to just recounts the memories from it. Oh, man I well, let me tell you my I had to shave my leg here is one of those dare MSN videos And I'm not convinced it's it's come back yet, and it's been like a whole year So that's definitely a memory a very current memory. Yes. Well, let me apologize on behalf of Microsoft that Well, it's okay because I've made all done my leg hair so Yeah, a lot of fun. We have a good time with that. So you're based out of Vancouver you're in Vancouver right now Yes, okay, so were you guys were you guys here in Toronto then when the nominees were announced this week or were you guys at West?
1:47Yes So how did you find out? I mean I know there were a lot of tweets going on after the nominations But how did you find out where you online waiting did someone your camp tell you like how did that all happen? You know, you know, I as with most things I find out through my fans throughout my aunt I I usually jump online and then like and then I noticed that they're tweeting like crazy or Facebook and like crazy Oh, so it's like something happened today and I got a couple of June nominations and then I Popped some champagne and Run around the underwear posh champagne first thing in the morning. There you go and yeah Yeah, it's surprising though because I mean you guys were nominated last year right pop album and then and then nominations this year was at a shock I
2:32Was possible it was not a shock, but it was it was It was great. I was really happy. I'm you know what like any time those nominations are coming out You're always sort of get I finished cross and hope that the work that you do will be will be recognized and and and to You know, there's a pretty big deal like those juniors are Pretty awesome. So we were we're really stoked and and you know, we all sent around a little email chain one another sort of congratulating each other and and and It were safe to go or say to have some fun and and we're up against some great Competitors and great friends and and really it's just gonna be a I'm just honored to be You know nominated and and we're gonna go and have fun and and and see what happens that's the quote
3:17I mean, it's such a Tough question. I know the the June knows question, but it needs to be asked right because you get nominated such a I don't know What else are you gonna say really right? Yeah, of course, of course Every wants to win but but it's the you know who cares But what's what's kind of cool is that you you've structured this tour to run you right into the June knows Yeah, that was kind of a weird fluke, but it it worked out that way perfectly. So we got on the road We have a great time and then by the time we were all like really What's the word like weathered looking from touring for six weeks or whatever it is then we'll appear on national television And then giant bags under our eyes and rock out You know, it's awesome and it's what a way to cap off the tour
4:05It's it's a bit of an unusual one because we're starting out east working our way back home to Vancouver and then going back out again The Saskatchewan ending in Regina for the June knows Don't think like I'm pumped. What a great way to cap it off. Have you guys talked about what song you're gonna play? Are they asked you to play a certain song? You know I to be honest with you. I have absolutely no idea. They've asked us to play a Give you enough some options and we I don't even know what's going on I have no clue. So hopefully it's a song. I know how to play. Yes, I would I would hope so Oh, yeah Talking about the tour beginning out east in Fredericton. I hear it's a really cool Like random venue. Do you know about that? Yeah, I actually don't know about it All I do know is that we are we're doing like a week of pre-production out in East Coast. So we're gonna be out there a week early
4:56Rehearsen and some arenas just getting to show up and running getting over working out all the tactical problems and And I love I love these ghosts man. Like I really really enjoy being out there. So I'm you know some his way to start off Nice and relaxing and then for all help very fool And what are you doing in pre-production besides rehearsing the songs is it gonna be like a like a full-on visual attack kind of thing? Yes, absolutely You know when you're doing these arenas shows there's a lot of production elements above and beyond the actual performing of the song So the you know it's it's up That's a lot of play the songs of course and then and then what we will be concentrating on in these rehearsals is more of the gimmicks stuff like the You know we have a flying rig where Josh goes launching into the air and want to make sure all the safety
5:44harnesses are operating as they should be and that you know the videos of all firing is Just working out all the really kind of boring stuff But the the things that make the show that much more special and how do you tell the story? I mean ever after so it's an epic tale. I mean it's one It's not one song, but essentially it's one it's one story. It's one yeah giant track Right? So like is that is that you try and do this live or you just taking the songs just placing them where? Where they fit in a live context as opposed to trying to play the record in its entirety It's it's a little bit of both we You know some stuff we obviously are playing older material as well So we try and incorporate that into the live still in a way that flows well You know I'd love to be able to play the record front to back of the fact that the you know fans don't want to hear just that
6:33album so We try and mix it up a little bit. We try and make it cohesive and and and make some sense live and so that it's not just like You know super crazy extremes during the show because that's just weird you want to have a good flow and a good momentum and Then we try and tell the the ever afterstore not only the performance but also through some video content and enter a little bit of stage gags on our part and on the first face of music tour it seems to be really very well received by the fans so we're gonna go out and And up a few more steps and hopefully they they like what we bring to the table The the bio the last line of the bio I don't know if it got floated by you before I got relief to the press But it says what very honest trench is done with ever afters create the story and soundtrack to a dark Tim Burton rock opera
7:22That hasn't been made yet Hollywood. Are you listening? So now so I'm gonna ask you since the record's been out for about a year now has yeah Has there have they been knocking on the door is there talks for some sort of film version of it? Well, that's interesting Been talking about maybe doing that at some point and trying to like I really love to do music videos for the more theatrical songs on the record the ones that aren't singles and And you know with those you could really you could do a big story and have sort of a short film type thing No, Steven Spielberg has not been knocking on my door, but I assume it's only a matter of time Well, he's taking breaks from doing these massive historical epics. Yeah, yeah So I mean like I said, I mean it was a pretty grand idea for record
8:09It's been about a year and a half ish now probably almost two years since you guys probably finna like wrap the record So are you writing new songs? You talking about you know doing another thing like this or just putting out a record like like a record Is you know just a collection of tunes? What we're doing right now is we are we are working on some new songs that will most likely make it on to a Sort of a re-release of ever after that we're gonna be releasing in the United States Not any plants we're not we're not shutting down to write one just yet But we feel like we still have quite a bit of life left in this and there's certainly a lot more touring to do with whatever after
8:56But um, you know try and keep people's interests peaked We will we will have a few little little songs coming down in the near future I don't have a lot of information that I can give away on that yet, but but but There will be some fresh stuff for sure. Well, you mentioned the states in there. So how are things going down south? I mean, I know for I mean even said the whale put out a documentary a couple years ago Just about how how tough it is to break into that market. How has it been for you guys? It's been good and then we have been really lucky down there are fans of just I Couldn't believe only lots of me to it in the US like there were just way more fans than I could have ever imagined and We've got plans to get back there after this the state music tour Looks like we're gonna be doing a quite a big no firm details yet, but but it is happening and
9:43On top of that we are just sort of on the verge of this up down there and that'll make things a lot more interesting for us too. So Yeah, we're sediment the state is great It's a tough tough not to crack for sure like you can't really grind it out like you do in Canada You know here you can sort of hit the same city over and over again and and grow it organically Whereas in the United States it takes a little bit more luck and a little bit more You know marketing and to be honest You like to put a shot when down there and we'll just keep grinding until it blows up. Yes
10:30Sounds like you're gonna be on the road for quite a while. Oh, yeah, that's okay Which kind of leads into something that I close interviews with which is something called five questions five quick questions one more answers Bring it rotor studio Sorry one more time road or studio. Oh road absolutely Landon or McCartney When you hear a song what usually hits you first lyrics melody or rhythm Melody song you've written you're most proud of Marianna or solo stuff or what? I don't know Like if you if you have a tune that like I don't know that that just means more to you than others It doesn't need to be a marionist tune if it's not sure Cinnamon cool and in one word mariano stretch magic bullet blender
11:23Yeah, all right, let's go with that. I like that I've got one of those are great. They're great man. You make anything I like walk a moly that's just freaking delicious. I haven't tried that you gotta try it man Yeah, I just drink it like a cup. That's great. Yeah, I love it. Thank you so much for doing this. I really appreciate it and When I see I'll see you at the junos Awesome Matt, thanks very much man. Appreciate your time anytime dude. All right. Take it easy. Oh shit. Take it
0:05Hi kids, we're Marianas Trench and you're watching MSN Exclosant So I've had you on red carpet Juneau's much music recently but last time you're actually on the show was doing this Derry Marianas Trench thing like two hours. Right. We talked about this on the phone recently but how is everyone like you said your hair is just starting to grow back?
0:51Yeah the leg hair just coming back now. It's been for two years. Something like that. How's everyone else doing from the eye experience? I still have a knot eating a marshmallow. I haven't eaten a marshmallow. I don't eat a lot of fries. Let's go with this fries. Fries in the marshmallows with you. I however well always talk in an Arnold Schwarzenegger accent. Yes. Yeah that's right. Yeah let's go to the next question in short sneaker accent. Perfect please. Should we try that? Yes. All right. Absolutely. It's not brutal. It's all right. Don't stop. Don't stop. There was a good one. Yeah it's just one. It's just one. Yeah. So I have a bit of a beef with you guys. I spell the band name wrong every single time I put an apostrophe. Yeah. Why is there no apostrophe? Ian? I don't know. No. Oh and interesting voice. But you're serious?
1:36I don't know. That was not true. I cannot answer that question that the grounds made incriminate me. I just thought I'd give you an easy question to throw out with the short sneaker thing. So by now, video is supposed to appear tomorrow at the show but it's not anymore so when are people going to see it? Sin. But it's an item. Good answer. Thank you. It's an item so bye bye now now. Well it's not an item. It's not an item. No but the song is. The song is. Which is not a song. I just really want to say bye bye now now. Bye bye now. Yeah. Bye bye now. We also, like I'm really a big fan of my new New Jersey jersey. We have this thing with words. So bye bye now now. I don't think everybody else finds that funny but us. I like the New New Jersey jersey thing. That's interesting. You know what joke like that I've been enjoying? You know like a Coney West kid is named North Northwest?
2:22Yeah. Don't you wish his middle name was by North? You're a play North. That would be an awesome middle name. So what's going on in the video? Here it's Vegas. I hear it's Epic. And there was a smoke bomb incident with your hands. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Was it healed yet? Yeah. I got a scar though. Yeah. It looked like a hard boiled egg was growing out of his room. Tell us about your incident. So what happened with the Arnold Boys? Yeah, the Arnold Boys. We were doing like it looked rad so like our lighting guy was out of smoke bomb. So I grabbed one to go up behind Josh and then I guess they were very cheaply made. Mexican kind of like really should not have been doing it kind of thing.
3:08And it just went and blew up in my hand but I guess it's whatever it is it's in there. It was like gunpowder color whatever but it just landed right here. It was kind of going. Flash when I was like this and it's like the hand was on fire. I'm like it's not working. The description of it from the guy who was in charge of pyro is he was just moving stuff and watching it that looked over and saw Ian like picking up in his head he was like. Oh, but it was too late. It was like the drums the next day. Like did you have a show coming up? No, I'm very happily we had already done the performance part because it was like it was about a blister like this. It was like a second degree. It wasn't first degree burn but it was like a second degree burn. It looked awful. Like you could see. You should get that on like the end of the video or like tag it as well. Is it bonus thing?
3:54Is it in a special behind the scenes? Did you get in there? I'm sure some of you. Yeah, it's got to be in there somewhere. See this thing. I'm sorry. I want to actually it it did look kind of like a hard boiled egg growing out of him but it looked like something had gotten and laid eggs in you. Yeah, it looked like a giant weird frog egg. One of those horror stories that you hear like oh it was a queen. Where in the story is the video of ever after? Right at the end. Right at the end. Well I know it's close to the end but if you found your way home or you back in the land of toys. It wraps everything up. It wraps everything up. We'd be very vague about this. Okay, that's fine. When we spoke on the phone you said you're going back in the studio shortly and I think that was on the way to the Juno so March maybe or something like that. So where are we at with? We haven't really been home yet. Okay, I'm busy.
4:39Still haven't been home since now. So once we get home then we'll be in the studio shortly. Right. So you've been on the road this whole time towards the States. Yeah, pretty much. And I've heard things are moving faster there than they did here. I mean you already have a new appeal. There's more going on, right? Yeah, for the first time doing a real national headlining tour to bring out 500 to 2,000 people a night compared to Canada where it was like 7, 8, 9, 10 tours for even bringing out 1,000 a night. In fact our first tours were like 7, 8, 9, 10 people. Yeah, that's where you were going. Double digits was a goal back then. Yeah. So triple digits was unheard of. No that was the promised land. Yeah, it was like who? One day there'll be 100 people at a show. And that's going back to what year?
5:24When would that have been? 2016. Okay, so just before I crossed my heart and all the songs started to hit. Right? Yes. Okay. So what's it like now when we talked in the final, I keep going back this thing. I'm sorry but you were talking. Your phone call was just really loud. We had a lot of time. I really left impressions. I was so happy to read that interview over today. True bro. Man, anyways remember that phone? No, just because you were saying like the music part is the easy part of these tours. Now it's all the gimmicks and all the other stuff that's going on with the stage show that makes touring a completely different game than it was. The show part is definitely different than it had been for five years where we would go out and play our set and banter and stuff like that. But now there's a full production and the video wall content and costume changes and stage antics and like technical sides of the stage thing and all that stuff, especially the first
6:13few times doing it, you really had to concentrate on where you had to be, when and what you had to do when. Now it's a little bit easier because you've done it 40-50 times. Yeah, I think at that point we've been playing the songs a lot so they're kind of on autopilot but the actual, we were coming to our first kind of arena tours with big production and stuff and it's all these other elements that we've never experienced before and it was certainly a big change in terms of our live show and a lot of fun for us. We talked to metric about this too because they just did stadiums or arenas across Canada and they were like we don't know where to go up. It was always more numbers, more numbers get to a bigger venue where it's up for Mary as a trench. I guess if you're looking at it for a bit. Full era arenas. Yeah, for a bit. This perspective is a little less disappointing. Yeah.
6:58The arenas can be bigger. Two nights at the arena. Ooh. What you can do, like a true arena if you get like, you know, well you do the stage right in the middle and it's full all the way around and then full floor. I think you're showing down to the ground. In the round? You're going to have a roll on some kit. That sounds like a man. I'm going to be honest actually. I have no interest in doing what you just described. Me neither. That theater in the round stuff man. That's stupid. Where's the backstage? You go on a beef bed. No. They'll drop down. How do you communicate? How do you communicate? Drop door with big fuzzy pillow that you jump into. Well that sounds adorable. You do have that. I just think you can't, you know, if you're the front, how are you communicating with the like 50% of the people who can't see you. That's the thing. Like the stage back as far as it goes on the arena.
7:46People on the floor, people around, that's good enough. Like in Nelson or Montreal, you could probably play to 15,000 people like that. And I think we're always here from that. So we've got some room to worry about. We have to get eaten off of this in the round thing. Yeah. First time we've ever brought it up. I feel like it's all you're talking about. It's all you're talking about lately. Party poopers. Serious, swooping on my party. I feel like that's all. Just quitters, hey. Quitters. MMVA is the last time I saw you. I'm going to switch topics here. You guys are known for your gimmicks. Where do these gimmicks start each time? Who has the idea? What was the brainchild? You talking about red carbon engines? Yeah, red carbon engines. Sorry. This was the end. This was yours. I really wanted to us to come in kind of like sea monkeys and a huge like fishbowl. Fish tank.
8:32But it was really hard to get. I guess it was too hard to get a fish tank that they could you know smoothly bring in on a track control list. That's a stupid gear. We were going to just stay. Yeah, that's full of you know that's full of water. Actually these swimming around in the water. But to do a tank that big it's like I don't know how many liters but it's just too heavy for a non giant semi diesel truck to pull and they can't have a truck like that. We probably would have had to make one as well which is you know to contain that much water would have been really expensive. It's interesting how like every once in a while Ian stops thinking about playing in the round and actually comes up with an interesting idea. Yeah, it's mine goes right back on the round. Yeah. And do you do this though he's original idea was a round bull. It was it was. You know it's funny though. This is rums or circles. Yeah. Yeah.
9:17It was crazy. It was horrible. That was perfect. Oh thank you. Okay five quick questions one more dancers. Yes. Everyone can answer. Roder studio. Road. Road. Ian. In the round. Lendinger McCartney. McCartney. Are we talking vocals or songwriting? We're talking. Oh no one's ever asked that. Let's go songwriting. One answer for each. Although I think I know you're answering. Songwriting, Lennon, singing McCartney. Concur. Rhythm section. McCartney. Okay. That's the base. But it makes sense. When you hear a song what usually hits you first lyrics melody or rhythm. Melody. Melody. Rhythm. With a wank. If someone's never heard Marianna's trench before what song do they start with?
10:05I don't care. Thunderstruck. Yeah. No place like home. Ooh. I wouldn't start with no place like home. Depends on the person. It really does. Yeah. That's to do a case by case. Because each person is going to like a different song. In one word Marianna's trench. Ew. Wow. Sandwich? Yeah. Mine would be like is that I wish I could have a single word to just describe like dot dot prolonged pause. Rest. Oh yeah. Rest. Rest. Rest. Rest. Oh. Are we going to talk about this always sunny shirt that you were? Oh we could do that. I mean it's pretty good man.
10:52We don't have to talk about it on camera. We could talk about it on camera. So what do you love about that show? What's so? Well I love that shirt right now. Night man coming? Yeah. I'd like to see them perform this live again. They did a little tour. I thought. Did you really? I did. I thought. I thought it was really good. I think Danny would be to a stroke. Which one do you like and even more? Okay. Let me ask you this. As a performer what do you learn from watching those guys perform? Now that you're acting more on stage than having to do all these antics. I think you learned from watching everybody perform. You know what I mean? We're talking about these guys. Those guys I mean you know I'll tell you what you watch from what you can gain from watching Danny DeVito is that you don't have to be big to take up a lot of like a lot of energy on stage you know what I mean because he's so little. He's this teeny little you know humpty-dumpty looking guy that comes out.
11:37He was like you know four foot whatever he is yet he commands so much attention even though he's so little you know what I mean and that's an interesting thing to see. That actually is a good point though. That's a powerful thing. Some people can totally just capture your attention. Not a big deal. Like Napoleon? Yeah. Napoleon. Yeah he's quite an amazing player. Napoleon gets him mad to you back to this day.
