00Sitting here the troubadour Los Angeles, California with Josh Rouse. How's it going? It's going good, man Good going good. Just finished sound checking very nice sounding good. Thanks. Let's play a song the first song I heard of you from us called miracle. Okay a couple years old. I guess now. Yeah, it's about just four years old Yeah, do you still play it? I just never do it so I don't I haven't played it in quite a while. I usually play with a band solo I don't play it that much. How can we do it solo tour this time? I'm just doing some I've got a new record coming out March. So I'm doing some kind of Promotion and kind of playing some concerts to pay for the promotion To get to all these places fair enough. Well, let's play miracle right now. I'm gonna talk the new record a bunch of stuff a bit I'm
05You just heard me or call from Josh Rose sitting here with him you mentioned Luke Ducek is opening up for you tonight from Toronto, Canada
37Yeah, how'd you couple with him is he gonna be playing with you tonight? Yeah, he's gonna play a couple songs with me I met him God, I don't know when my first record came out like 98 and his band was playing. I'm trying to remember the name of his band He's gonna kill me for not remembering but I'll get it from a little later. Yeah, yeah I met him then and then just kind of on and off I saw him through the years touring and stuff like that And then it just kind of worked out that he could do these dates and support and support the show So he's doing a good job same kind of singer songwriter stuff as yourself. Yeah, it's his stuff's a little bit more. I Don't know a little bit more He plays guitar better than me You sounded pretty good in sound check. Yeah. Well, yeah, it's a different style He's a little bit more of a he can pick a little bit more. I'm a little more boss and over style
26I guess yeah, I know she brought a ukulele for one tune. Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna play ukulele on a couple songs tonight That's pretty cool. You don't see a ukulele come up too much. No, I bought some in Ireland last summer I was playing I really dug it so I said hey why not yeah What's the island like playing in the uk? It's great. It's great. Yeah, I do really well over there They seem to be more in tune with music. Yeah, they have a lot of magazines and just a lot of people are into it over there And it's a smaller country so It's easier to get around and ward spreads pretty pretty rapidly there. So yeah for years and years I've been playing there and it's going good there now. I heard you were living in Spain Maybe you're still living there. I'm not quite sure. Yeah still living there the new record influenced by the Spanish sounds at all Yeah, I wrote it actually most of it when I when I got there the first couple weeks that I moved there just because I couldn't speak the language
15spending a lot of time in the apartment, you know and So yeah, and it was beautiful weather. I was right on the Mediterranean coast and so hopefully that made it its way onto the record More Morocco sounds like what do you mean by that? I'm a Spanish sound to it. Well Not necessarily a Spanish sound but maybe more I'm playing nylon string guitar a lot on the record but more of a kind of A coastal feel I guess I don't know Makes any sense Yeah I heard a read an interview with you saying there's more artists followings over there where people you know We'll buy a record, but they'll buy every record from that. Yeah a lot different than what we see over here Yeah, do you wish it was like that over here? Well sure. Yeah, I mean I just you can there's definitely a cultural difference when I when I'm over there and I come over here
04You can really see just everything's moving a lot faster over here You know people's attention spans a little bit shorter and kind of it's a quicker society. I guess so I prefer I prefer kind of the slow lane. I guess so do I do you think we're moving away from music as society here? No, I don't think so at all. I think it's even I Think it's being spread around more with the internet I don't know if people are really I think they're finding their taste and really kind of sticking with that Which is interesting cool I want to talk about the internet in a bit. Let's play a song one of yours your choice. What do you want here? Let's hear 1972 Ross rose 1972 we're talking about the internet here Luke sound checking the background
28You think the internet's gonna revolutionizing music I should say do you think it's gonna get rid of major labels with my space And we have all this new stuff. No, I think they'll always exist I always think they'll be big artists like Jay Z and or you know big big acts for like People that can't get it in middle America But I think for people like myself the internet's a big a useful tool, you know I have a lot of people buying my records on iTunes, which is cool Do you like that you think we're gonna get away from like the whole album concept thing? Well, I'm making vinyl on this record Yeah, so it's it's kind of cool Maybe it'll go to like the people who really like it like to collect vinyl and then and then people that download it and I Think CDL stick around for a while not a but I think it's gonna you know slightly decrease over the years
16Do you like the whole vinyl thing? I mean I love it because I know my dad used to me in the 60s at parties But you only get five songs and someone have to get up and switch it. Yeah different musical. Yeah, it's a nice Yeah, you're a little bit more involved in the process. Yeah. Yeah, you listen to vinyl a lot It's not what you're playing. I do I don't I in Spain. I haven't got a record player over there yet. So you should pick one up. Yeah I read while you were recording you don't record alternate versions You just once you get a song you get a song and it's done. Yeah, usually just the just the record You just you record it and it's done with and it's yeah. Yeah, that same kind of attitude Yeah, go go mark Miss Appiah plays drums or Pissapia Pissapia Sophia Joe's brother from Guster you big gust or fan. I know Gus has been on the show a few times So yeah, man. They've really helped me out. You know, I used to open forum back five five years ago and you know
04It's still going so that's good. You still keep in contact with them. Yeah. Yeah, I seem ever once in a while while I'm in Nashville They recorded their last record in Nashville. Did you guess on at all? No, no, it's too bad. No There goes that segue I was playing another tune. How's direction sound? Sure It used to Wonder why you don't get one thing done in the night don't like a direction Direction you are going to Attention to you all as
23Direction Three to search us a direction from the vanilla sky soundtrack
42We're talking about the way music is going and it seems to be the TV shows and commercials and movies is the way to get your music out there now Have you noticed a big following coming from that vanilla sky sound? I think some people found out about me through that definitely It was you know, I had some good company radio head and Paul McCartney Jeff Buckley and all those people so Yeah, I mean, that's definitely you know radio really isn't you know commercial radio is pretty pretty bad so It's a good way for people to find music, you know on TV show or you know, just other ways to Discover new artists. How do you discover new artists? Usually just two friends, you know people recommend Hey, have you heard this Jen's likeman record or have you heard you know? Laura vieres or something like that. I think you'd like it. That's usually how it happens
29Just for the mouth man cool still the most powerful. I agree tool. There is yeah We just think every we can show called five questions five quick questions one more answer iPod or CDs When I travel I use iPod lemon and alcohol or marijuana marijuana song you've written your most proud of My love is gone cool and one word Josh Rose Tired let's play that let's play my love is gone and thank you so much.
